The building housing Re Martino Residence was completely refurbished in 2007.
The original building was in a state of severe decay when a thorough and well-planned renewal project transformed it into the totally new and fully operational building we have today, offering nine apartments (from studios to two and three-room suites), organized around an inviting courtyard and garden that also provide a cosy, sheltered place to take a break; a small inner courtyard designed as a quiet, secluded spot for meditation is overlooked by the landings serving the apartments; and there is also a spacious, brightly-lit and flexible room that is ideal for a range of purposes.
The new building was designed using the finest traditional local materials: Sicilian terracotta, lava stone, lime plaster, skilfully blended to produce the clear, crisp lines that are the hallmark of the Residence.
The overall appearance of the Residence is of a harmonious whole, a set of boxes nestled carefully one on top of the other and “flattened” out by the façade. This seamless vision is enlivened by the dynamic, seemingly carefree arrangement of the windows on the main façade (the pattern is in fact due to the layout of the rooms on the other side of the wall), and by the crisp lines of the box in subtle grey plaster that emerges from the building and houses the main stairs.
Re Martino Residence aims both to stand out in, and act as beacon, for the local neighbourhood while acting as a bridge between the many different visions of Catania. The Residence is located i just a few minutes from the sea (the tiny fishing ports of San Giovanni Li Cuti and Ognina, the seafront promenade and coastline) and from Catania’s main business and shopping areas such as Via Giacomo Leopardi, Corso Italia and Piazza Europa. The Ciminiere Exhibition Centre, Catania’s leading expo centre, on Viale Africa is just a few minutes’ drive away.
